Assam Anti-Polygamy Bill 2025

The Assam Assembly tabled the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025.
The Bill makes polygamy a criminal offence with up to seven years in jail and a fine, and up to 10 years if an existing marriage is hidden.
Punishment doubles for repeat offenders.
The law applies to residents of Assam, those marrying outside Assam, and non-residents with property or benefits in the State.
The Bill excludes Sixth Schedule areas and Scheduled Tribes under Article 342 of the Constitution.
Priests, village heads, parents, and legal guardians involved in polygamy can also be punished, including fines up to ₹1.5 lakh.
