Assam Anti-Polygamy Bill 2025

  • The Assam Assembly tabled the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025.
  • The Bill makes polygamy a criminal offence with up to seven years in jail and a fine, and up to 10 years if an existing marriage is hidden.
  • Punishment doubles for repeat offenders.
  • The law applies to residents of Assam, those marrying outside Assam, and non-residents with property or benefits in the State.
  • The Bill excludes Sixth Schedule areas and Scheduled Tribes under Article 342 of the Constitution.
  • Priests, village heads, parents, and legal guardians involved in polygamy can also be punished, including fines up to 1.5 lakh.
