- The Bill makes polygamy a criminal offence with up to seven years in jail and a fine, and up to 10 years if an existing marriage is hidden.
- Punishment doubles for repeat offenders.
- The law applies to residents of Assam, those marrying outside Assam, and non-residents with property or benefits in the State.
- The Bill excludes Sixth Schedule areas and Scheduled Tribes under Article 342 of the Constitution.
- Priests, village heads, parents, and legal guardians involved in polygamy can also be punished, including fines up to ₹1.5 lakh.
