- In India, it receives Schedule I protection under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
- Banni Grasslands are a major arid and semi-arid ecosystem supporting native herbivores such as blackbuck, chinkara and nilgai.
- Gujarat’s wider conservation programme aims to translocate 500 blackbucks and 100 chinkaras to restore native herbivore populations.
