Border guarding force – First Women Officer

  • In another first for women, 25-year-old Prakriti has been inducted as the first woman direct-entry combat officer in the border guarding force, ITBP.
  • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) force is the last of the CAPFs (Central Armed Police Force) to induct women officers in combat roles after the government first allowed it to enrol them in 2016.
  • The force already has women in combat roles but only in the constable ranks.
  • The ITBP, that guards the 3,488 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China, was raised in 1962 in the aftermath of the Chinese aggression.
  • Two other forces, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), were allowed to directly induct women officers in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
ITBP
  • ITBP was raised on 24th October in 1962 and is deployed on guarding 3488 km long India-China Border from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The ITBP is one of five Central Armed Police Forces of India and was raised on 24 October 1962, under CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) Act, in the wake of 1962 Sino-Indian War.
  • It was provided full autonomy after the Parliament enacted the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Act (ITBP), 1992. It works under the command of Union Home Ministry.
Central Armed Police Force
  • Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) aid in combating external threats (they mainly manage internal security issues) but are managed by Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Central Armed Police Force includes Assam rifles (AR), Border security force (BSF), National Security Guards (NSG), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
