  • JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy sworn-in as the 24th chief minister of Karnataka along with his deputy G Parameshwara, the Karnataka Congress chief on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha.
  • Kumaraswamy, aka 'Kumaranna', was administered the oath of office and secrecy by governor Vajubhai Vala
  • This will be Kumaraswamy's second term as the chief minister of Karnataka since 2007 when he last held the post for 20 months.
  • In the recent election of Karnataka Assembly held for 222 out of 224 seats, BJP captured 104 seats and emerged as the single largest party with only nine seats short of a simple majority mark of 112.
  • The Congress with 78 seats and JD(S) with 37 seats, and two Independent candidates formed a post-poll alliance with a total of 117 MLAs
  • Six-time Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly after the BJP withdrew nomination for its candidate Suresh Kumar
