- The Chinese government said that 9.56 million people were born in China in 2022, while 10.41 million people died.
- It was the first-time deaths had outnumbered births in China since the early 1960s.
- Births were down from 10.6 million in 2021, the sixth consecutive year that the number had fallen.
- The population in 2022 - 1.4118 billion - fell by 850,000 from 2021.
- The birth rate in 2022 was also down from 7.52 in 2021.
- By 2035, 400 million people in China are expected to be older than 60, accounting for nearly one-third of its population.
- In comparison, in 2021, the United States recorded 11.06 births per 1,000 people, and the United Kingdom, 10.08 births.
- The birth rate for the same year in India was 16.42.
