  • A new species of bent-toed gecko named Cyrtodactylus vanarakshaka has been discovered in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
  • The name ‘vanarakshaka’ is derived from Sanskrit words meaning ‘forest protector’, honouring the Assam Forest Department.
  • The species was found in the forested slopes of Jatinga in the Barail Hills, a sensitive ecological transition zone.
  • This is the fifth Cyrtodactylus species recorded in Assam.
