- The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology launched underwater archaeological explorations off the coast of Poompuhar.
- The exploration began on September 19, 2025, after a gap of more than two decades.
- The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Indian Maritime University.
- Poompuhar, also known as Kaveripoompattinam, is located in the Mayiladuthurai district.
- The survey involves advanced equipment such as side-scan sonar, echo sounders, ROV (remotely operated vehicle), and sub-bottom profilers.
