  • The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging the Union government to keep the Lok Sabha strength at 543 seats and retain the existing inter-State distribution of seats.
  • The resolution also sought to maintain the current Lok Sabha–Rajya Sabha ratio of 2.2:1.
  • It urged implementation of 33% reservation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha election using the existing 543 seats, followed by reservation in State Assembly elections without delay.
  • The 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023 provides one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies after the Census and delimitation exercise.
  • Tamil Nadu’s share of Lok Sabha seats is currently 7.18%; Union Home Minister Amit Shah had stated that this proportion would not be reduced even if the total number of seats increases.
  • Women’s representation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly has increased from 12 out of 234 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the previous Assembly to 23.
