  • The ICMR-INDIAB Dietary Study 2025 was released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • Indian diets contain 62% of daily calories from carbohydrates, among the highest globally.
  • The study surveyed 121,077 adults across 36 states, union territories, and Delhi.
  • High-carb foods include white rice, milled whole grains, and added sugars.
  • White rice is dominant in southern, eastern, and northeastern India; wheat in northern and central regions.
  • Millets are staples only in Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
  • Saturated fat intake exceeds safe limits in almost all states except Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur.
  • Protein accounts for only 12% of daily calorie intake, with dairy and animal proteins contributing 2% and 1%, respectively.
