- Chennai Port Authority has initiated the process to procure its first green tug as part of emission-reduction measures.
- The port currently operates three diesel-powered tugs used for manoeuvring ships and handling marine operations.
- The Green Tug Transition Programme aims to replace diesel tugs with those powered by ammonia, hydrogen, or methanol.
- The proposed green tug will have a pulling power of 60 tonnes and is expected to be delivered within two years of awarding the contract.
- E-tugs reduce nitrogen and carbon emissions by 100%, while hybrid tugs achieve a reduction of about 25% to 35%.
