First Green Tug of Chennai Port

Chennai Port Authority has initiated the process to procure its first green tug as part of emission-reduction measures.
The port currently operates three diesel-powered tugs used for manoeuvring ships and handling marine operations.
The Green Tug Transition Programme aims to replace diesel tugs with those powered by ammonia, hydrogen, or methanol.
The proposed green tug will have a pulling power of 60 tonnes and is expected to be delivered within two years of awarding the contract.
E-tugs reduce nitrogen and carbon emissions by 100%, while hybrid tugs achieve a reduction of about 25% to 35%.
