- The Indian Army is officially commemorating Operation Pawan martyrs for the first time after 38 years.
- Operation Pawan was India’s first major overseas military mission after Independence, conducted in Sri Lanka from 1987 to 1990.
- The mission aimed to disarm militant groups, including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), under the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord.
- 1,171 Indian soldiers were killed, and over 3,500 were injured, making it one of India’s heaviest wartime losses abroad.
- Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran received the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for bravery in 1987.
- The tribute will be held at the National War Memorial, New Delhi.
