Five new judges Madras High Court

  • The President appointed five additional judges to the Madras High Court. 
  • With the appointment of five new judges, the working strength of the High Court had increased from 52 to 57.
  • The sanctioned strength of the Madras High Court is 75.
  • The number of women judges in the court also increased to an all-time high of 14 after the induction of the three new women judges.
  • One of the new judges (Ms. Victoria Gowri) appointment was opposed by a group of advocates from Chennai on the ground of having delivered “hate speeches” against religious minorities.
  • But the apex court dismissed the cases, on merits, minutes after she completed taking oath.
