- A new study has identified flash flood-prone areas mainly in the Himalayas, the West Coast and Central India.
- The Extremely vulnerable sub-basins are located in the Brahmaputra, Narmada, Tapi, Mahanadi, Brahmani and West Coast River basins.
- High-risk areas are also found in parts of the Godavari, Ganga, Mahi and Indus River basins.
- The Flash floods usually occur within four to six hours of intense rainfall and are often caused by cloudbursts in hilly regions.
- The Main causes include saturated soil, sudden release of water from dams and fast surface runoff due to urban development.
- The Flash Flood Guidance System, which has been operational since 2020, much provides early warnings up to twenty-four hours in advance.
