Tenkasi Forest Division is launching a ‘Golden Jackal Ambassadors’ scheme in schools and colleges.
The scheme aims to protect the golden jackal, whose population is declining due to construction and loss of shrubs and forests.
Students will receive training and will spread awareness about conserving golden jackals and helping injured animals return to the forest.
The plan also covers awareness about other small wildlife such as mongoose, ant-eater, tortoise, snakes, and monitor lizard.
The model follows the ‘Friends of Elephants’ scheme, which has reduced human–elephant conflict by involving villagers in early alerts and food creation inside forests.
