Gujarat Wetland - Black-Necked Stork Breeding

  • Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat was identified as a major breeding site for the Black-necked Stork.
  • The Black-necked Stork is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
  • Researchers recorded a peak population of 21–23 storks during surveys conducted from July 2024 to March 2025.
  • Four active nests produced eight young birds during the October–December breeding season.
  • All the nests were built on Neltuma juliflora, an invasive tree locally known as gando baval.
  • Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is a Ramsar wetland site in Jamnagar district, Gujarat.
