- The United States reported the world’s first known human case of the H5N5 strain of avian influenza (bird flu).
- Tests first detected Influenza A H5, and later confirmed it as subtype H5N5.
- H5N5 had previously been found only in birds and animals, never in humans.
- Wild aquatic birds are natural reservoirs of Influenza A viruses.
