Hul Diwas is observed every year on June 30 to honor the Santhal Rebellion of 1855.
The rebellion was led by tribal leaders Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu against British rule.
The Santhals rose from Bhognadih village in present-day Jharkhand.
The uprising had the support of Sidhu and Kanhu’s brothers and sisters, who also sacrificed their lives.
The Santhal tribe was promised land by the British in 1832 but faced exploitation by zamindars and moneylenders.
Hul Diwas honors the tribal fight against colonial oppression and their role in India’s freedom struggle.
