In-flight internet connectivity

  • International airlines could start providing Internet onboard over Indian skies in the next three months.
  • Domestic airlines will need additional time.
  • Once aircraft reaches 3000m height it gets internet through geostationary satellites.
  • These satellites beam signals directly on to the antenna of the airplane.
  • Only INSAT satellite of India has been permitted for this purpose.
  • The direct transmission of internet through satellites will be carried over
    • The Ku Band: 12-18 gigahertz (GHz)
    • The Ka band: 26-40GHz
