The coir industry has a turnover of around ₹16,000 crore and contributes nearly 1% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Major export products include coir pith, fibre, yarn and tufted mats; major destinations include the United States, China, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
India has over 21,000 registered coir units, providing direct and indirect employment to more than 7 lakh workers, around 80% of whom are women.
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) implements the Coir Vikas Yojana (CVY) to support artisans, skill training, technology development and domestic and international marketing.
