India’s Most Populated District

North 24 Parganas in West Bengal is now the most populated district in India.
It has an estimated population of about 10.9 million as of 2025.
The district covers an area of around 4,094 square kilometres with a population density of 2,469 people per square kilometre.
It is part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area and includes cities such as Barrackpore and Bidhan Nagar.
Rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, and refugee settlements after the Partition of 1947 contributed to the rise in population.
As per the 2011 census, the district recorded a literacy rate of about 84 percent.
