- This day aims to spread awareness about protecting cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) and preventing their extinction.
- The day was started in 2010 by Dr. Laurie Marker, founder of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).
- India declared cheetahs extinct in 1952 and launched Project Cheetah in 2022 to reintroduce them.
- As of 2025, India has 32 cheetahs, including 21 cubs born in India.
- Cheetahs are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
