- The Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, exploded on April 26, 1986.
- Nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to the radiation.
- An area of roughly 2,600 sq km remains (permanently) out of bounds for human habitation, due to the radio-active contamination.
