- The day aims to raise awareness of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the risks of nuclear energy in general.
- On December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to observe this.
- An explosion tool place at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 at the city of Pripyat in Ukraine.
- It spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union, now the territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
