International Day for Interventional Cardiology 2026 – September 16

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed the day in 2022 to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiac procedures.
September 16 marks the date of the first coronary angioplasty, performed by Dr. Andreas Grüntzig in 1977.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of death globally and include diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels.
Interventional cardiology includes procedures such as balloon angioplasty, which uses a small balloon to open blocked arteries.
The day also promotes awareness of prevention, treatment, complications and access to appropriate cardiac care.
