The day began on October 17, 1987, and was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992 through Resolution.
The day aims to eradicate poverty, protect human dignity and promote access to safe housing, clean water, sanitation, healthcare and education.
More than 2.8 billion people face inadequate housing, while 826 million people live in extreme poverty in 2026, surviving on less than US$3 per day (2021 purchasing power parity).
The 2026 focus supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 10, 11 and 16, covering poverty eradication, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, and peace and justice.
The 2026 focus is “Safe Homes for All” under the 2026–2028 theme “United for Peace and Human Rights.”
