International Day for the Remembrance of Slave Trade and Abolition - August 23

  • The day is observed to memorialise the practice against millions of innocent lives who were the victims of the transatlantic slave trade during colonial rule. 
  • The day was given its first importance by UNESCO.
  • The international slave trade was first eradicated in the year 1807.
  • The day was first observed in countries like Haiti (August 23, 1998) and Goree Island in Senegal (August 23, 1999).
  • The theme for this year's is 'Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism'.
