	- The day was initiated by UNESCO in 1997 to acknowledge the historical injustices of slavery and celebrate the resistance of enslaved peoples.
 
	- On August 22–23, 1791, enslaved people in Saint Domingue (present-day Haiti) launched a revolt that sparked the Haitian Revolution.
