International Day for the Total Elimination of nuclear weapons 2026 - September 26

The day was declared by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 2013 and has been observed since 2014.
It aims to increase public awareness about the threat posed by nuclear weapons and promote their total elimination.
The UN General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946 identified nuclear disarmament as a major UN goal.
In 2026, the high-level plenary meeting will be held on 29 September in New York.
An estimated 12,187 nuclear weapons remained worldwide in 2026, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
