Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS

November 8 , 2025 12 days 141 0
  • The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is accelerating unexpectedly as it moves away from the Sun and toward Earth.
  • Observations suggest it lost significant mass during its perihelion (closest approach to the Sun), causing non-gravitational acceleration.
  • Its speed increased from over 130,000 mph to around 152,000 mph.
  • The acceleration cannot be fully explained by the Sun's gravity.
  • Estimated mass loss is over 13% near perihelion.
  • The comet is six weeks away from its closest approach to Earth.
