ISRO’s RISAT-2BR1

- ISRO is set to launch its Radar Imaging Satellite, the RISAT-2BR1 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
- Its launch was earlier scheduled in 2020 after RISAT-2A but is now preponed.
- The RISAT, a remote sensing satellite, provide all-weather surveillance using synthetic aperture radars (SAR).
- RISATs are the first all-weather observation satellites from ISRO.
- It designed to provide a continuous view of earth either at day or night for the forces to detect border infiltration.
- The satellite will be launched using ISRO's own Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) called PSLV-C46.
- ISRO is also planning to send its cartography satellite Catosat-3 among other small defence satellites.
About RISAT Series
- The RISAT series by ISRO are first all-weather earth observation satellites.
- These Radar imaging satellites are designed to all-weather surveillance using synthetic aperture radars (SAR)
- On 20 April 2009, RISAT-2 was deployed in orbit prior to RISAT- 1.
- RISAT-1 was successfully launched by PSLV-C19 on 26 April 2012 for a period of five years.
- It is first indigenous microwave remote sensing satellite designed and developed by ISRO.
