- The Indian government amended the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, effective 20 February 2026.
- Synthetically Generated Information (SGI) includes AI-created or AI-altered audio, video, or audio-visual content that appears real.
- All AI-generated content must have visible disclaimers or watermarks, and illegal content must be removed within 3 hours.
- Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), Non-Consensual Intimate Images (NCII), impersonations, and content threatening public safety are prohibited.
- Metadata and digital fingerprints are embedded for tracing the origin of AI content; routine edits and accessibility features are exempt.
