Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP)

  • Originally called Pranahita-Chevella project in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, it was redesigned, extended and renamed as Kaleshwaram project in Telangana in 2014.
  • It is aimed to make Telangana drought proof by harnessing the flood waters of the Godavari.
  • The project starts at the confluence point of Pranahita River and Godavari River.
  • When completed, it will be the world’s largest irrigation and drinking water system.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has held that environmental clearance given to this project is “in violation of law”.
  • It was granted after completion of substantial work, by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
  • The ruling was delivered by a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel.

Background

  • Mission Kakatiya is a flagship programme of the Telangana government.
  • The mission aims to rejuvenate water storage structures in order to help small and marginal farmers in the state.
  • The Mission Bhagiratha aims to provide safe drinking water to every household in both cities and villages in the state of Telangana.
