Mohana Sundari, an auto driver from Chennai, won the Kamla Bhasin Award (South Asia) 2025 for promoting gender equality.
She is the first recipient from Tamil Nadu and received the award in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The award is instituted by The Azad Foundation, National Foundation for India, and iPartner India.
Mohana is the President of Veera Pengal Munnetra Sangam (VPMS), a cooperative of over 600 women auto drivers.
VPMS supports women drivers, many of whom are single parents, with financial stability, emergency funds, and access to schemes like ESI (Employees’ State Insurance) and PF (Provident Fund).
