  • Kurinji (Strobilanthes sessilis) has bloomed in Gudalur’s newly notified reserve forest after eight years.
  • The flowering signals the revival of grasslands in the Western Ghats and reflects changing climate patterns.
  • The species sessilis blooms once in 8 years, unlike the neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), which blooms once in 12 years.
  • Botanists have identified 33 kurinji varieties in the Nilgiris, varying in shades of purple, blue, white, and pink.
