Kurinji flowers in Gudalur

Kurinji (Strobilanthes sessilis) has bloomed in Gudalur’s newly notified reserve forest after eight years.
The flowering signals the revival of grasslands in the Western Ghats and reflects changing climate patterns.
The species sessilis blooms once in 8 years, unlike the neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), which blooms once in 12 years.
Botanists have identified 33 kurinji varieties in the Nilgiris, varying in shades of purple, blue, white, and pink.
