Lakkundi Hidden Monuments – Karnataka

Lakkundi in Gadag district, Karnataka, will undergo a technology-based survey to locate hidden monuments.
Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage (DAMH) signed an MoU with the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru.
Technologies include Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
Drone surveys and photogrammetry will also be used to identify structures hidden under vegetation.
Lakkundi was a major urban centre during the 10th–12th centuries CE under the Kalyana Chalukyas.
Its temples display Vesara style, combining Nagara, Dravida and Bhumija architectural styles.
Karnataka is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to propose Lakkundi for the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
