- Israel has become the first country in the world to use laser weapons to shoot down enemy drones during the ongoing war in Gaza.
- The use of the Iron Beam is also known by its Hebrew name Magen.
- It will complement existing systems such as Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow.
- These laser systems are useful for eliminating cheaper enemy targets like drones rather than spending expensive missile interceptors.
- But their maximum effective range is about 10 kilometers—significantly shorter than Iron Dome’s 40 kilometers.
- Russia (Peresvet), USA (HELIOS), China (Hurricane-3000), UK (DragonFire) and India’s (IDD&IS) Mk2A are the other-Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system in the world.
