Tamil Nadu is close to eliminating malaria, with 33 out of 38 districts reporting zero indigenous cases in the past three years.
Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Chengalpattu, and Salem are the five districts still reporting cases, accounting for 37%-45% of the State’s malaria cases.
Malaria cases in Tamil Nadu have declined from 5,587 in 2015 to 321 in 2025. Cases in Chennai have reduced from 173 in 2023 to 121 in 2025.
The Most reported cases in recent years have been imported rather than locally transmitted: 330 of 384 in 2023, 208 of 347 in 2024, and 203 of 321 in 2025.
The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine conducts surveillance through blood smear testing, monitoring fever cases at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Government Hospitals (GHs), and tracking migrant labourers.
Annual Parasite Incidence has fallen below 1%, and there have been no malaria outbreaks in the past three years.
