Mangrove Clam Captive Breeding

  • Recently, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) achieved captive breeding of the mangrove clam Geloina erosa.
  • Mangrove clams are burrowing bivalves that live in muddy and brackish mangrove-swamp habitats.
  • They are commonly called mud clams and are locally known as “Kandal Kakka” in northern Kerala.
  • Mangrove clams are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • They are filter feeders that recycle nutrients, stabilise sediments, and support mangrove ecosystems.
