- The government notified the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to expand gas use.
- India plans to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030 from about 6.2% in 2025.
- Natural gas is a fossil fuel mainly made of methane (CH₄) (Methane).
- It reduces pollution by lowering Particulate Matter (PM), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Sulphur Oxides (SOx).
- Consumption is expected to rise from 52 million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) in FY25 to 112 MTPA by FY40.
- Government initiatives include City Gas Distribution (CGD), Compressed Bio Gas (CBG), and Unified Tariff (UFT) policy.
