New Mangrove Belt

  • The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has created a new mangrove belt on Battle of Adyar Island in the Adyar Estuary.
  • Mangrove species planted include Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Avicennia marina, and Excoecaria agallocha.
  • The invasive species Prosopis juliflora was removed before planting the mangroves.
  • A fishbone layout with three main canals and 62 distribution canals was created across the island.
  • The fishbone structure was constructed to support water flow and mangrove growth.
  • The green belt aims to reduce erosion and support biodiversity in the Adyar Estuary.
