The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) inaugurated the world’s first hydrogen production facility using nuclear process heat at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.
The facility uses the Copper–Chlorine (Cu–Cl) thermochemical cycle powered by heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR).
It is developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) as a technology demonstrator for carbon-free hydrogen production.
The project aims to validate nuclear-based hydrogen generation and support future commercial-scale clean energy applications.
It is the first facility globally to integrate nuclear reactor heat with Cu–Cl hydrogen production technology.
