  • A 7-month fishing ban is in effect from November 1 to May 31 in Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapada, Odisha.
  • The ban aims to protect the endangered Olive Ridley Sea turtles during their mating and nesting season.
  • The turtles arrive in November, and the female turtles lay eggs in March.
  • The forest department has set up fourteen turtle protection camps, including four offshore camps at Madali, Sasanipada, Ekakula, and Babubali islands.
  • The sanctuary covers 1,435 square kilometers from Hukitola to Dhamra, and fishing is restricted within 20 kilometers of the coastline.
  • In March 2025, 606,933 turtles laid eggs, and Odisha hosts 50 % of the world’s Olive Ridley population and 90 % of India’s sea turtles.
