Saalumarada Thimmakka, known as the mother of Karnataka’s Trees, passed away at 114.
The title “Saalumarada” means “row of trees” in Kannada.
She and planted 385 banyan trees along State Highway 94 from Kudur to Hulikal.
She had no formal education and earlier worked as a quarry labourer.
She received the Padma Shri in 2019 and was listed in the BBC’s 100 Women in 2016.
