- All government-run hostels in Tamil Nadu will now be called ‘Samooga Needhi Viduthigal’ (Social Justice Hostels).
- This aims to remove the caste and religious labels and create equality among the students.
- The State runs 2,739 hostels, helping 1.79 lakh poor and marginalised students from various communities.
- The decision follows the suggestions from a committee led by retired judge K. Chandru to reduce caste differences in schools and colleges.
