The Tamil Nadu government released a three-year Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Policy 2026, targeting the deployment of 2.5 gigawatts (GW)/10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage capacity.
New solar or solar-hybrid renewable energy projects of 1 MW and above must install BESS capacity of at least 10% of their installed capacity from 1 April 2027.
Existing solar and wind projects of 1 MW and above will be encouraged to install BESS for renewable energy integration, peak management and grid support.
Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited will act as the State Nodal Agency and operate a single-window system for BESS projects.
Tamil Nadu has an installed renewable energy capacity of 29.8 GW, including 14.5 GW of solar and 11.6 GW of wind power.
