  • A new report titled ‘Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2023’ was released recently.
  • It was released by International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency, United Nations Statistics Division, World Bank, and the WHO.
  • In 2021, 675 million people still lacked access to electricity.
  • Of those, 567 million people lived in Sub-Saharan Africa – accounting for more than 80% of the global population without access.
  • Meanwhile, 2.3 billion people lacked access to clean cooking, largely in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
  • At the current rate of progress, 660 million people are projected to still lack access to electricity in 2030.
  • 1.9 billion people would continue to rely on polluting cooking fuels.
  • The share of renewable energy in total final energy consumption remains low at 19.1%.
