Tiger Reserve Report 2026

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) released the "Roadmap for Active Management of Tigers in India" report based on the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation.
The report states that about two-thirds (38 of 58) of India's tiger reserves have a declining prey base, poor habitat quality, or both.
Only 20 tiger reserves have both adequate prey and good habitat, while 36 reserves face prey shortages and 17 reserves have both poor habitat and inadequate prey.
Nine tiger reserves have zero or critically low resident tiger populations, and 25 reserves have declining tiger numbers.
India has an estimated 3,682 tigers, with 2,338 inside tiger reserves and 1,344 outside protected areas; about 75% of the world's wild tigers are found in India.
The report recommends habitat restoration, prey recovery, anti-poaching measures, removal of invasive species, and protection of wildlife corridors to improve tiger conservation.
