  • India secured a record 9 medals at the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2026 held in Italy.
    • The Indian team won 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals among participants from 39 countries.
  • West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched ‘Arjun Vahini’, a 200-member specialised disaster response squad modelled on the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), on 1 September 2026.
  • Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma became the first woman officer from the non-medical branch of the Indian Armed Forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent on 1 September 2026.
    • Commissioned into the IAF Education Branch in 1994, she assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) and was the first woman Tri-Services officer to command a Sainik School, serving as principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala.
  • Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia erupted, disrupting nearly 3,000 flights and leaving over 340,000 passengers stranded.
    • Anak Krakatau, meaning “Child of Krakatoa”, is located in the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra, about 150 km from Jakarta; it emerged from the sea in the caldera formed after the 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa.
  • The International Day of Charity is observed every year on 5 September to encourage people, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders to help others through volunteering and charitable activities.
