  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted its first declaration on sea-level rise.
  • The declaration states that island nations do not automatically lose their statehood if their territory becomes submerged due to rising seas.
  • It supports the stability of established maritime zones despite changes in coastlines caused by sea-level rise.
  • It calls for stronger early warning systems, coastal protection and climate adaptation finance, especially for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
  • Around 770 million people live less than five metres above the high-tide line, highlighting the risks from rising sea levels.
